Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, along with Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju, visited the flood-affected Arun Chapori area of Dhemaji district on Wednesday.
According to the evening bulletin of Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) Dhemaji district remained the worst affected by the current wave of floods, with a population of over 17,000 affected in 173 villages affected.
Officials said that Sissiborgaon and Jonai constituencies in Dhemaji district have been the worst affected.
Apart from houses and roads, bridges and other infrastructure have been affected by the deluge in the district.
During the visit, the Union ministers inspected the flood-affected areas in the district, reviewed the prevailing flood situation, assessed the damage caused to houses, property, agricultural land, roads, bridges, and other public infrastructure, and interacted with the affected families and local residents.
Three other districts – Dibrugarh, Biswanath and Nalbari – remain affected by floods, the ASDMA report stated.
After a ground assessment of the flood affected areas in the state, the Union ministers will submit a report to the central authorities.
The Union Ministers had on Tuesday aerially surveyed flood-affected areas of Arunachal Pradesh apart from a ground assessment of the damage caused by the calamity in the state.
Notably, Union home minister Amit Shah personally spoke to Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over telephone to review the flood situation and assured that the central government would extend all possible assistance and stand firmly with the affected people.
In addition to issuing strict directions to the concerned departments to ensure the timely supply of relief materials and essential commodities, the chief minister has ensured that rescue operations are being carried out at full pace by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force
