Only 6 Granted Citizenship Under CAA in Assam as State Reports 1.72 Lakh Identified Foreigners

The Assam government has identified a total of 1,72,673 foreigners in the state under the provisions of the Assam Accord, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma informed the Assam Legislative Assembly in a written reply.

According to the government, 31,789 identified foreigners have been deported as of June 30, 2026. At the same time, cases involving 73,759 suspected foreigners are still pending before Foreigners’ Tribunals.

The state currently has three Transit Camps/Holding Centres located at Matia in Goalpara district, Charaikhola in Kokrajhar district, and Eraligol in Sribhumi district. As of June 30, 2026, a total of 174 declared foreigners were being housed at the Matia Transit Camp.

The government also stated that ₹1,86,15,642 has been spent on detention camp-related expenses since the establishment of such facilities.

In addition, a total of 2,366 people have been deported from 2011 up to June 30, 2026.

Responding to a separate query on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), the government informed the Assembly that 70 people in Assam have so far applied for Indian citizenship under the Act. Of these, six applications have been approved and the applicants have been granted Indian citizenship.
