Assam MP from Jorhat and Deputy Leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi has criticised both the central and state government for not doing enough to mitigate the grave situation in the flood-affected state.
“Just as North India, particularly Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, witnessed devastating destruction during recent natural disasters, Assam is facing a similarly situation today. Sadly, despite so much time having passed, no Minister from the Central Government has visited Assam,” Gogoi said.
“People remember that in similar situations, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh used to visit Assam. This Prime Minister has time for foreign visits and for repeatedly coming to Assam during elections to seek votes, but has not found the time to visit the state even once during this devastating flood crisis,” he said.
Referring to the immense hardship faced by people across Assam, Gogoi said rescue operations, greater deployment of the armed forces, and active intervention by the central government are urgently needed.
“Roads, national highways, homes, shops, and agricultural land have suffered extensive damage. Therefore, the people of Assam expect a special financial package of Rs 2,000 crore from the central government for relief and rehabilitation,” he said.
He expressed concern that so far there has been no assurance from the Central Government.
“Moreover, the State Government has also shown considerable negligence. It has failed to coordinate relief efforts effectively or make a strong case before the Central Government for the assistance Assam urgently,” he said.
