The Takam Mising Porin Kébang (TMPK) has temporarily suspended its road blockade and economic blockade against Arunachal Pradesh following a series of discussions with the Government of Assam and representatives from Arunachal Pradesh.
TMPK had launched an indefinite economic blockade on Wednesday in protest against the alleged firing along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border in Dhemaji district on Monday, reportedly arising from a dispute over land encroachment.
The blockade by TMPK, which is the apex student’s organisation of the Mising community, was apparently launched after several persons were injured, four of them critically, following the incident.
A case has been registered by Assam Police even as Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu has assured that the firing incident will be investigated properly and impartially.
A crucial meeting was held on Thursday at the office of the Dhemaji District Commissioner with representatives of the Government of Assam, including Border Protection Minister Atul Bora and Education Minister Ranoj Pegu.
This was followed by a meeting at Likabali, organised on the initiative of Adi Students’ Union, apex students body representing the Adi community of Arunachal Pradesh, and Adi Ba:né Kébang Youth Wing (ABKYW), among representatives of TMPK, Galo Welfare Society (GWS), Galo Youth Organisation (GYO), Galo Students’ Union and All Lower Subansiri District Students Union (ALSDSU).
Among the key demands laid down by TMPK for withdrawal of the economic blockade include the arrest of the accused in the case within 48 hours and timebound resolution of the border dispute between the two states.
“The persons named by TMPK in connection with the alleged brutal attack at Badati-Mingmang-must be arrested within 48hours and brought before the law. TMPK demands that the investigation and subsequent legal proceedings be conducted in a fair, transparent and time-bound manner. There can be no compromise when it comes to the safety, dignity and security of people living in the border areas,” it stated.
TMPK further strongly objected to the practice of individuals attending discussions on Assam soil while carrying firearms.
Earlier, Assam border protection and development department minister Atul Bora, along with Cabinet minister Ranoj Pegu, held an important meeting with Takam Mising Porin Kebang.
“I appealed to all concerned to maintain peace and harmony in the border areas and refrain from any action that could affect the cordial relations between the people of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. I also urged TMPK to withdraw the economic blockade in the larger interest of the people,” Bora said after the meeting held at the Dhemaji DC’s office.
