Mizoram has 48 drug rehabilitation centres providing care to over 5,200 people

Mizoram currently has 48 centres and homes providing care and rehabilitation services to 5,224 people affected by drug addiction, officials said on Sunday.

According to officials, the state government has provided Rs 42 lakh in financial assistance to these rehabilitation centres and homes during the current year.

In addition to the existing rehabilitation network, the state government operates the ‘Hulhliap’ short-stay centre, a detoxification facility for people affected by drug addiction. So far, 2,255 people have been admitted to the centre for treatment, with nine batches completed since it was launched in June last year.

The government has spent more than Rs 3.86 crore on the nine batches conducted at the facility. The centre has also received an additional Rs 1.34 lakh in assistance from other sources, an official said.

The Hulhliap short-stay centre was opened on June 23 last year at the Synod Revival camping centre at Neihbawi, near Aizawl. The facility has been designed to accommodate around 200 people at a time.

Officials said those admitted to the centre initially undergo a 15-day detoxification programme under the supervision of doctors, nurses and counsellors. The treatment is followed by specialised spiritual counselling aimed at supporting the recovery process.

After completing their stay, those undergoing treatment are either sent back to their families or referred to rehabilitation centres for further treatment and support, depending on their individual needs.

The network of rehabilitation centres, homes and the Hulhliap facility forms part of Mizoram’s efforts to provide treatment, counselling and rehabilitation services to people affected by drug addiction.

The government-supported facilities are aimed at providing both immediate treatment and longer-term rehabilitation, while helping people return to their families and communities after completing the required care.
