A new pictorial brochure on the butterflies of Garbhanga Reserve Forest, jointly published by Aaranyak and the Kamrup East Forest Division, was released today at Lokhora Kona, Garbhanga RF, by Shri Jayanta Malla Baruah, Hon’ble Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change; Finance; and Mines & Minerals, Government of Assam.
The release was attended by Shri Mrigen Sarania, Mayor of Guwahati, along with senior officials of the Assam Forest Department and other dignitaries.
The brochure features 125 butterfly species documented from Garbhanga Reserve Forest in recent years, providing an accessible pictorial resource for nature enthusiasts, students, researchers, conservation practitioners and visitors to the forest. It seeks to encourage greater awareness and appreciation of the rich butterfly diversity of Garbhanga and promote informed engagement with its natural heritage.
Situated along the southern edge of Guwahati, Garbhanga Reserve Forest is an important biodiversity-rich landscape. More than 270 butterfly species have been recorded from the area so far, underscoring its significance as a habitat for butterfly diversity and the wider ecological values of the forest.
The brochure was prepared by an Aaranyak team comprising Nayanjyoti Moran, Dr. Pranjal Kr. Das, Rumana Maheen and Udayan Borthakur.
The documentation and dissemination of such biodiversity information contribute to strengthening public awareness and supporting conservation efforts for Garbhanga’s unique natural heritage.
