Two people were killed and another sustained serious injuries after a wild elephant attacked them at three separate locations in Assam’s Sonitpur district on Tuesday, forest officials said.
According to Sonitpur West Divisional Forest Officer Bishwajyoti Das, the elephant reportedly strayed out of a nearby forest and attacked residents in different areas under the jurisdiction of the Dhekiajuli Police Station.
The deceased have been identified as Rahmat Ali and Ganesh Toppo. The injured victim, Rup Singh Bormahalia, was rushed to Tezpur Medical College and Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.
Forest Department personnel have launched efforts to drive the elephant back into its natural habitat. Officials said the animal was last spotted resting inside the Balipara Tea Estate.
The Forest Department is closely monitoring the elephant’s movement and has intensified measures to prevent further human-wildlife conflict in the area. Authorities have also urged residents to remain alert and avoid venturing into areas where the elephant has been sighted.
