Historic First-Ever Silchar Municipal Corporation Election Underway

Polling is underway for the first-ever Silchar Municipal Corporation election after the town was upgraded from a municipal board to a municipal corporation. Around 2.7 lakh voters are eligible to exercise their franchise across 40 wards on Saturday, October 3.

The Silchar Municipal Corporation comprises 42 wards in total. However, BJP candidates have already been elected unopposed in two wards, leaving polling to be conducted in the remaining 40 wards.

A total of 131 candidates are in the fray for the election, with voting taking place at 303 polling stations spread across the municipal corporation area.

The district administration has put in place extensive arrangements to ensure smooth and peaceful polling. Additional security and law-and-order measures have also been deployed to prevent disruptions and facilitate hassle-free voting.

The election marks a major civic milestone for Silchar, as residents vote for representatives to the newly formed municipal corporation for the first time, ushering in a new chapter in the town’s urban governance.
