IIT Guwahati undergoes massive protests due to an ‘Exceptionally High’ fee hike

IIT Guwahati has seen a significant increase in fees for both BTech and MTech programs, following allegations that authorities failed to adhere to the agreed fee structure. Research scholars faced restrictions on registering for the semester due to non-payment of the semester registration fee. PhD students’ fees have risen by Rs 10,900 for the July-November semester, from Rs 34,800 in January-May 2025 to Rs 45,700. Part-time scholars have also experienced a significant fee hike, from Rs 2,500 to Rs 25,000 per semester. PhD students claim that IIT Guwahati does not disburse the central government’s house rent allowance (HRA). BTech students are expected to participate in the protests today.
