The Dima Hasao district, like the rest of the nation, kicked off National Sports Day with a three-day event at the N.L. Daulagupu Sports Complex. District Commissioner Shri Munindra Nath Ngatey, ACS, officially opened the event in front of Superintendent of Police Shri Mayank Kumar, IPS, NCHAC Deputy Secretary Shri Prabhat Pegu, ACS, as well as representatives from the Social Welfare Department, the District Sports Office, and the district administration.
Held from August 29 to August 31, the festivities are a part of the national sports and fitness program that was started by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. DC Ngatey spoke at the event and emphasized the value of athletics in developing mental and physical toughness. On the occasion of Major Dhyan Chand’s 120th birthday, he paid tribute to the renowned hockey player, saying, “Dhyan Chand played a key role in India’s Olympic gold triumphs in 1928, 1932, and 1936.” His commitment and self-control continue to serve as motivation for all athletes.
He also urged young people to pursue sports with grit and focus. Prior to the felicitation of the district’s exceptional athletes, the welcoming message was given by District Sports Officer Shri George Chutia. Everyone in attendance also took a sports vow, which was administered by ADC Shaurrya Shamra. Participation in a range of activities, such as badminton, chess, kabaddi, tug-of-war, and a one-kilometer walk, was enthusiastic on the first day. The event was made more culturally vibrant by the inclusion of indigenous games that reflected the customs of the Biate, Nepali, and Dimasa.
A number of MAC constituencies, including Maibang, Umrangso, Barail, Diger Kuki, Sangbar, Kharthong, Biate, Zion, Jatinga, Hatikhali, Laisong, Hangrum, Dihamlai, Lower Khartong, and Jinam, in addition to Haflong, will host competitions on the second day. In order to be evaluated by their individual universities, debate competitions are also planned at certain colleges. Cycle rallies in Maibang and Diyungbra, along with a number of sporting events organized by Block Development Offices in association with neighborhood youth organizations, will mark the program’s conclusion on the third day.
