The endangered dhole, or Asiatic wild dog, has been observed for the first time in Shirui Village, Manipur, marking a significant milestone for wildlife conservation. Captured on a camera trap during a survey by the Environmental Force at Grassroot Level, this discovery adds a new species to Shirui’s documented wildlife and emphasizes the ecological importance of its forests. As per ENFOGAL, the discovery of dholes in the Shirui hills challenges the belief of local residents that these predators were absent. Conservationists view their presence as a sign of a healthy forest ecosystem thriving with prey and limited human disturbance.
The survey indicated strong local support, particularly from Pamreithing, a former hunter and conservationist, who helped identify camera trap locations. The dhole, listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, underscores Shirui’s importance as a biodiversity hotspot, necessitating further scientific surveys. The Ukhrul Forest Division’s conservation efforts, like community patrols under the COSFOM project, are vital for protecting the region’s wildlife.
