Haflong Police has been charged by the Dima Hasao District Congress Committee of not responding to a First Information Report (FIR) against Prabin Hagzar for allegedly threatening Congress leader Bapujit Langthasa and his family with death. Dima Hasao Deputy Commissioner Munindra Nath Ngate received a memorandum from a Congress delegation, headed by District Congress President Haizerangbe Neume, requesting immediate action and legal action. According to Congress, Hagzar confronted Langthasa after he made remarks in the media that connected him to the Haflong market syndicate. Hagzar threatened to punish Langthasa if he didn’t take back the allegation. Citing a “collapsing law and order situation” in the district, Congress leaders assert that no case has been filed or anyone detained in Langthasa’s FIR.
They also said that even after filing formal complaints, law enforcement had disregarded similar concerns from Maibang and Umrangso in prior months. “The public is becoming more and more afraid. Police credibility is quickly declining,” Thaosen stated. Congress leaders call on law enforcement to stop Hagzar’s threats against public officials, arrest him, and bring charges against him. Thaosen also criticized Debolal Garlosa, the executive member of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council, for not keeping his promise to abolish the Haflong market syndicate. In spite of public promises, the syndicate is still in operation. “The public is suffering due to the skyrocketing prices of essential goods,” he stated. Kalpana Hojai attested to the District Commissioner’s assurance to the party that Hagzar would face harsh consequences.
