‘Freedom Trail’ Concludes in Tawang: Retracing the 14th Dalai Lama’s Historic 1959 Journey

The second edition of the ‘Freedom Trail’ walk successfully concluded on Sunday at Pungteng-Tse, marking a profound spiritual and historical commemoration of the 14th Dalai Lama’s entry into India. The six-day trek retraced the arduous path taken by His Holiness in 1959 when he sought asylum, arriving in Tawang on April 5 of that year.

The journey began at Kenzamani, the point of entry for the Dalai Lama over six decades ago. Led by Lungla MLA Tsering Lhamu, the participants trekked through the rugged terrain of the Tawang district, receiving an outpouring of support from the local community. A particularly moving reception took place at Kudung Village, where the ceremonial arrival of His Holiness’s portrait served as a powerful symbol of the region’s enduring faith and cultural resilience.

The final leg of the trail saw high-profile participation, including Deputy Commissioner Namgyal Angmo and various district officials, who joined the devotees on the stretch from Drekhang Teng to Pungteng-Tse via the historic Tawang Monastery. The trail serves not only as a physical challenge but also as a “living tribute” to the unbreakable bond between the people of Monyul and the Tibetan spiritual leader.

A grand concluding ceremony was held at Pungteng-Tse to honor those who completed the full trek from Kenzamani. The event was attended by Tawang ZPC Leki Gombu, SP Tasi Darang, and members of the Tawang Monastery, alongside a massive gathering of residents from neighboring villages. The atmosphere was enriched by vibrant cultural performances, celebrating the heritage that the trail seeks to preserve.

During the felicitation, Deputy Commissioner Angmo congratulated the participants for their spiritual commitment and physical endurance over the six-day journey. The Abbot of the Tawang Monastery provided the final blessings, emphasizing that the legacy of 1959 keeps motivating new generations. As the participants were recognized for their dedication, the event reaffirmed Tawang’s unique place in global history as a sanctuary of peace and a bastion of Himalayan Buddhist culture.
