From Violence to Development: Sarma Highlights Tinsukia’s Transformation, Inspects Key Projects

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma began a two-day visit to Tinsukia on Wednesday to review ongoing infrastructure projects, launch urban development initiatives and interact with residents to gather feedback on government schemes.

The visit will focus on the district’s development, improvement of municipal services, expansion of public infrastructure and strengthening of healthcare facilities. The chief minister is also scheduled to inspect key projects, including a 1,000-seat auditorium and an inter-state bus terminus, besides visiting the proposed site of a medical college.

Ahead of the visit, Sarma shared his thoughts on Tinsukia’s transformation through a social media post. Located in the eastern part of Assam, around 500 km from Guwahati, the district has witnessed significant changes over the years, moving from a period marked by militancy towards greater economic activity and social cohesion.

Describing this change, the chief minister said, “A region affected by violence is now a region ushering in development.”

Tinsukia is one of Assam’s important commercial districts, with its location and economic activities contributing to its role in the state’s eastern region. During his visit, Sarma is expected to review development initiatives aimed at improving urban infrastructure and public amenities for residents.

Several projects related to urban development are on the agenda. These include the development of a playground, the construction of public parks and the rejuvenation of water bodies. The initiatives are intended to improve public spaces and provide residents with better facilities for recreation and community activities.

The chief minister is also scheduled to launch a mobile application aimed at improving municipal service delivery. The initiative is expected to make it easier for residents to access civic services and communicate their concerns to the municipal authorities.

Tinsukia’s performance in the Swachh Survekshan cleanliness surveys is another aspect highlighted by the chief minister. The cleanliness assessment evaluates urban areas on various parameters, including sanitation, waste management and public participation in maintaining clean surroundings.

On the second day of the visit, Sarma will inspect the progress of an ongoing 1,000-seat auditorium and an inter-state bus terminus. Both projects are among the infrastructure initiatives expected to strengthen public facilities in the district.

The auditorium is expected to provide a venue for public programmes, cultural activities, official events and other large gatherings. The bus terminus, meanwhile, is intended to improve transport facilities and connectivity for passengers travelling between Assam and neighbouring states.

Healthcare infrastructure will also feature prominently during the visit. The chief minister will visit the proposed site of a medical college in Tinsukia, which is expected to expand access to medical education and healthcare services in the region.

The proposed institution is expected to benefit residents of Tinsukia and neighbouring areas, including parts of Arunachal Pradesh, by strengthening access to healthcare facilities closer to home. The project could also contribute to the availability of trained medical professionals and create opportunities for students seeking medical education in the region.

As part of the itinerary, Sarma will inaugurate an autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) blocks manufacturing plant. AAC blocks are lightweight construction materials commonly used in building projects. The plant is expected to support local economic activity, create employment opportunities and contribute to the supply of construction materials for infrastructure development.

The chief minister will also attend the Moran Sports Carnival during the visit, bringing a sporting and community engagement component to his programme.

Apart from reviewing projects and participating in official programmes, Sarma is scheduled to interact with residents on both days. These interactions are intended to provide an opportunity for people to share their views on government policies, raise concerns and offer feedback on the implementation of development schemes.

The visit comes amid efforts to improve infrastructure and public services across Assam’s towns and districts. For Tinsukia, the focus on urban amenities, transport facilities, healthcare and employment reflects the range of development priorities facing the district.

Through the two-day programme, the state government is expected to assess the progress of ongoing projects and identify areas requiring further attention. The chief minister’s proposed interactions with residents will also provide an opportunity to understand local concerns and review how government initiatives are reaching people.

Sarma’s remarks on Tinsukia’s transition from a region affected by violence to one focused on development underline the broader changes he has highlighted during his visit. The outcome of the projects under review, particularly those related to healthcare, transport and municipal services, will be important in determining how these initiatives improve everyday life for residents.
