North East United FC will face Bengaluru FC in the MG Indian Super League 2026-27 season at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati on Friday.
The kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
North East United have collected seven points from their opening three matches to sit at the top of the league table, building an early-season foundation on attacking ambition, defensive resolve and a home crowd that continues to fuel their charge.
Wins against Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Kerala Blasters FC, followed by a goalless draw away to Odisha FC, have given the Highlanders a strong platform.
For head coach Juan Pedro Benali, however, the biggest positive has been the mindset within the squad. “The mentality. We go into every game with the mentality that we are no longer the underdogs,” he said, highlighting the belief and unity that have shaped the team’s start to the campaign.
The Highlanders will need that conviction against a Bengaluru FC side that has also begun the season unbeaten. The Blues have six points from two matches, having defeated Sporting Club Delhi 3-2 before recording a 2-0 victory over Chennaiyin FC. With a game in hand after sitting out Gameweek 3, they arrive in Guwahati with an opportunity to close the gap on the league leaders.
Benali expects a demanding contest against a tactically disciplined opponent. “Bengaluru are tactically strong and have some very good players. They also have a good coach who knows exactly what he is doing. It will not be easy,” he said.
The challenge, he believes, will be as much about breaking down Bengaluru’s structure as it will be about managing their attacking threats. The Blues possess quality through the middle and out wide, while their defensive block has proved difficult to breach. NorthEast United, meanwhile, will look to use their own attacking options and vary their approach to create openings.
“The details, concentration and crucial phases of the game will make the difference,” Benali added, underlining the fine margins that could decide Friday’s encounter.
At the other end, Gurmeet Singh will once again be central to the Highlanders’ efforts. Having kept two clean sheets so far this season, the goalkeeper has provided an important layer of assurance behind the defence. Yet, for Gurmeet, the focus remains firmly on the collective challenge rather than individual milestones.
“They are a good side, of course, but we are confident in our own qualities. As the coach said, it will be a good game for the fans, and I think we are ready for the challenge,” Gurmeet said.
That confidence will be important against a Bengaluru side capable of testing the Highlanders in different ways. Gurmeet also stressed the importance of composure and communication, particularly when building from the back and keeping the team compact during difficult spells.
The history between these sides adds another layer to the contest. Across 19 previous meetings, Bengaluru hold the advantage with nine wins to North East United’s two, while eight encounters have ended in draws.
Their most recent meeting, in February 2026, finished 1-1 in Bengaluru.
The Highlanders also claimed a 2-1 away victory in November 2024, a reminder that the Blues can be challenged when these sides meet.
For North East United, the objective is not to dwell on the past or look too far ahead. Benali was clear that the team’s attention remains on the immediate task. “We do not think beyond the next game,” he said. “The most important thing is this game. Only this game matters right now.”
That focus reflects a side intent on establishing itself through its performances rather than its position in the table alone. The Highlanders have shown they can find the net in bursts, defend with discipline and compete away from home. Now comes another test of their progress against one of the league’s established sides.
