IMD Forecasts Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms in Guwahati for Next 2–3 Days; ASDMA Issues Alert

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday predicted moderate to heavy rainfall along with thunderstorm at the isolated places in Guwahati city and adjoining areas in the coming two to three days owing to current meteorological conditions and monsoon scenario in the state.
“The weather pattern suggests that in continuation of the earlier weather forecast on heavy rainfall, the coming two to three days would also face the thunderstorm with lightning with moderate to heavy rainfall (6-12 cm/24 hours) across the city and the adjacent areas which may aggravate waterlogging, flooding, flash floods, slow vehicular movement, and increase the risk of localised landslides in vulnerable pockets,” a statement issued by Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said.
Several areas of the city, especially the low-lying and flood prone localities, witnessed artificial floods and waterlogging on Monday after heavy spells of afternoon rain inundated the areas, causing hardships to commuters in the arterial roads.
The district authorities and ASDMA are closely monitoring the situation and emergency response systems are being kept on alert.
In view of the situation, the ASDMA has requested the residents of Guwahati city to take all necessary precautions and remain vigilant.
“Daily commuters and long-distance travellers are requested to plan their routines accordingly, avoiding unnecessary movement during periods of intense rainfall. Residents in low-lying and hillside areas should stay alert for any signs of flooding or landslides.
Further, ASDMA has requested the local authorities also to allow their employees to leave for their homes early in view of the weather forecast.
“The status of the situation would be updated by ASDMA on its official website, https://asdma.assam.gov.in/resource/assam-weather-forecast, and on all its social media handles in time to time for general awareness. Hence, people are urged to stay tuned to official weather updates and follow advisories issued by local authorities to ensure safety during this prolonged spell of rain,” it stated.
