A sensational robbery case reported from Jorhat’s Jyotipur-Kalakhowa area has taken an unexpected turn after police investigations revealed that the alleged crime was allegedly staged by the complainant herself.
The incident, reported on June 2, had initially created panic in the area. Ruby Patra, an elderly widow living alone in a large two-storey house, had alleged that two armed robbers entered her residence during the evening, held a knife to her throat and looted cash and gold ornaments before fleeing.
The incident was particularly embarrassing for the police as it reportedly occurred barely 500 metres from the Bhogdoi Police Outpost. Following the complaint, police launched an intensive investigation, examining CCTV footage from the area and questioning numerous motorcycle riders who had travelled through the locality during the relevant period.
Despite extensive efforts, investigators found no concrete evidence supporting the robbery claim. During repeated questioning, police noticed inconsistencies in Ruby Patra’s statements, which eventually led them to uncover the truth behind the alleged crime.
According to police, the robbery was a pre-planned drama allegedly orchestrated by the elderly woman with the assistance of a female relative. Investigators said Ruby Patra had been struggling with loneliness after her only son and daughter-in-law moved to a rented house about eight kilometres away.
Police stated that Patra had hoped the robbery incident would persuade her son and daughter-in-law to return and live with her. The alleged plot was reportedly born out of emotional distress and a desire for companionship rather than any criminal motive for financial gain.
The case has sparked widespread discussion about the growing issue of loneliness among elderly parents whose children live separately. Many residents expressed sympathy for the woman, saying the incident reflects the emotional challenges faced by senior citizens living alone despite having financial security and comfortable homes.
While the revelation has changed the course of the investigation, the incident has also highlighted broader social concerns regarding family relationships and the emotional well-being of elderly people.
