Barely four months after Nagaland’s much-awaited municipal elections, the Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) has been thrust into political uncertainty following the filing of a no-confidence motion against its Chairperson Neikhozo Suokhrie and Deputy Chairperson Khrielievi Chusi. The move, initiated by several elected council members, underscores deepening cracks within the council’s leadership and a rising tide of discontent over governance and coordination issues.
According to an official notification issued by Kohima Deputy Commissioner B. Henok Buchem on Wednesday, a formal written notice expressing the intention to move the no-confidence motion was submitted on October 9, in accordance with Section 15 of the Nagaland Municipal Act, 2023. The motion has been endorsed by one-half of the elected members, excluding ex-officio and nominated representatives, thereby fulfilling the legal requirement for its validity.
The notice, jointly moved by two elected KMC members, calls for the immediate removal of both the Chairperson and the Deputy Chairperson, citing growing dissatisfaction among council members. The Deputy Commissioner has since convened a special meeting on October 22, where all elected members will debate and decide the fate of the motion through a formal vote.
