Mohali Court Jails Woman for Five Years Over Toddler’s Death in 2023 Accident

A court in Mohali has sentenced a woman, identified as Renu Sirohi, to five years of rigorous imprisonment for causing the death of a three-year-old boy in a road accident in Peer Muchalla in November 2023. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on her after finding her guilty under Section 304 Part-II of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

During the proceedings, the court considered CCTV footage that reportedly showed Sirohi driving while holding a mobile phone. The footage played an important role in establishing the circumstances surrounding the incident and her responsibility for the child’s death.

After examining the evidence, the court decided to award five years of rigorous imprisonment. Sirohi had sought leniency in sentencing, but the court rejected her plea and upheld the punishment.

The case highlights the serious consequences of distracted driving, particularly when motorists use mobile phones behind the wheel. The death of the young child in the incident had led to legal proceedings against the accused.

The sentence serves as a reminder of the risks associated with using mobile phones while driving and the importance of maintaining attention on the road. The court’s decision also underlines the role of CCTV recordings in examining road accident cases and establishing facts during criminal proceedings.
