One Dead, Several Injured in Pre-Poll Violence in Mokokchung

Pre-election violence in Longkhum village resulted in one fatality and several injuries before the April 9 by-election for the 28-Koridang Assembly constituency. The clashes occurred late Sunday night between supporters of different candidates, leading to stone-pelting incidents. Three individuals were injured and admitted to Dr. Imkongliba Memorial District Hospital, with one, Imrongsungba Imchen (38) from Artang ward, succumbing to his injuries while being transferred to Dimapur for advanced care. Police have yet to confirm the precise circumstances surrounding his death.

In total, 16 individuals have been arrested in relation to the violence, and while the situation is currently deemed under control, lingering tensions remain in the area. On the following day, unrelated violence occurred in Mangmetong village, where unidentified individuals vandalized 12 vehicles. Fortunately, there were no injuries, but security forces conducted search operations that led to the recovery of arms and ammunition, resulting in one arrest.

In light of the escalating violence, Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer Ajit Kumar Verma has revoked permissions for two temporary political offices in Longkhum, citing breaches of law and order. Additionally, a night curfew has been imposed in sensitive regions, including Longkhum, Mangmetong, and Alichen, running from 6 PM to 5 AM daily until further notice. Gatherings of five or more individuals have been prohibited, with exceptions for essential and emergency services.

Nagaland’s Deputy Chief Minister Y. Patton expressed his condemnation of the violence and conveyed condolences over Imchen’s death, urging citizens to maintain peace and uphold the democratic process. The BJP’s Nagaland unit echoed this condemnation, labeling the violence a “brutal and senseless act” and calling for thorough investigations and strict action against the perpetrators. Authorities remain vigilant as the by-election date approaches.
