Private networks in mining could reshape industrial productivity as Vi and Hindalco deepen digital push

Vi Business and Hindalco Industries Limited’s partnership to deploy a dedicated private network at the Baphlimali Bauxite Mine in Rayagada, Odisha, highlights the growing economic role of industrial connectivity in improving productivity, safety and operational efficiency.

The multi-year managed services deployment will cover spectrum, core, radio access network (RAN) and managed services, creating a secure and scalable digital backbone for Hindalco’s mining operations. The initiative marksHindalco’s first private network deployment and supports its broader Industry 4.0 and digital transformation strategy.

The network is expected to enable worker safety solutions, fleet management, drone and CCTV-based surveillance, real-time monitoring and other operational applications. An Integrated Command and Control Centre will bring these capabilities together through centralised visibility, data-driven decision-making and operational control.

From an industrial competitiveness perspective, such infrastructure can support greater real-time intelligence, improved resource utilisation and safer operations in complex mining environments. It also creates a foundation for scaling automation and other digital applications.

M P Sunil Kumar, Chief Enterprise Business Officer, Vi Business, said the project demonstrates Vi’s ability to deliver customised private networks for complex industrial environments. Hindalco’sKailashPandey, CEO, Aluminium Upstream, said the network would support connected, automated and data-driven mining.

The initiative also aligns with responsible mining goals, with Baphlimali recently receiving Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) Performance Standard Certification. Together, the companies said, digital connectivity and responsible mining practices can support a safer, smarter and future-ready operation.
