The Assam Pradesh Trinamool Congress on Tuesday formally inaugurated its new headquarters at Panjabari in Guwahati, marking a fresh organisational push in the state.
West Bengal MP Nadimul Haque and Assam Pradesh Trinamool Congress working president and MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed jointly inaugurated the party office. The programme began with a tribute to popular singer and artist Zubeen Garg.
Following the inauguration, an organisational meeting was held in the presence of around 300 party functionaries, including Haque and Ahmed. During the meeting, the party formally announced its decision to contest the forthcoming by-election to the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency.
Addressing the media after the meeting, Sherman Ali Ahmed said Trinamool Congress workers were committed to serving the people and that the party would contest the bypoll.
He said the candidate would be selected through a formal process and would be expected to be highly educated, honest and dedicated, besides being able to communicate clearly in either Hindi or English.
According to Ahmed, application forms for prospective candidates began being distributed at the new party headquarters on September 1. Interested candidates have been asked to collect and submit the forms at the party office by September 5.
Ahmed further alleged that the country and Assam were currently suffering from BJP’s “misrule”. He claimed that people were looking for a strong political alternative to both the BJP and Congress and asserted that the Trinamool Congress would seek to emerge as that alternative.
“We will fight for people’s rights, and the pressing issues confronting the people will form the core of our electoral campaign,” he said.
