Trump Signals Greenland Deal Framework at Davos, Pauses Tariff Threat

US President Donald Trump has announced that a framework has been reached for a future deal with NATO concerning Greenland and the wider Arctic region, following days of sharp warnings that included military intervention and tariff threats. The announcement came after Trump’s speech at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos on Wednesday (January 21).

Trump said the understanding was formed after what he described as a “very productive” meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. He added that negotiations between the US and European partners will now work out the final details.
The American leader has repeatedly argued that Greenland holds major strategic value for the United States, citing its vast oil and gas potential and rare-earth mineral reserves such as cobalt, graphite, and lithium. He also emphasised that US control would strengthen its military reach in the Arctic and limit Chinese and Russian influence.
Trump said the planned tariffs, set for February 1, will not be imposed for now.
