A new season of ecotourism in Assam has begun with the official reopening of the Manas National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Harmony between environment and culture was symbolized by the awareness march held to commemorate the reopening, which echoed the Harinaam devotional chanting. Suman Mahapatra, Central Divisional Head of the BTR Forest Department, opened the park’s main entrance and conducted a sorrowful one-minute silence in honor of Zubeen Garg, the beloved vocalist from Assam who just passed away.
Speaking to the media, Mahapatra urged guests to use caution and responsibility when touring the sanctuary. “The wildlife has benefited from a much-needed period of recuperation following months of closure. Now, visitors need to be sure that their actions don’t upset this delicate equilibrium,” he said. Mahapatra also outlined a number of upcoming projects for the park, such as ongoing awareness efforts and steps to prevent encroachment.
He underlined that unchecked human encroachment puts animals in peril and urged everyone to take responsibility for protecting Manas’ biodiversity. Mahapatra paid homage to the deceased music legend, expressing sorrow and highlighting the Assamese people’s emotional loss. “All of us are quite sad. Everyone enjoys Zubeen’s music, and we’re talking about methods to meaningfully honor his memory,” he said.
