NPCI BHIM Services Limited’s (NBSL) appointment of former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni as brand ambassador signals a broader alignment with India’s policy thrust on expanding secure, inclusive, and trust-driven digital payments infrastructure. As BHIM approaches a decade of operations, the move underscores a transition from basic digital onboarding to deepening user confidence and preference—key pillars in the next phase of financial inclusion. Built on NPCI’s public digital infrastructure, BHIM has played a central role in advancing low-cost, interoperable payments across the country.
NBSL MD & CEO Lalitha Nataraj said the objective is to position BHIM as the preferred payments app for every Indian household, highlighting that “trust remains central” to its growth strategy. Dhoni’s association, widely linked with reliability and composure, is expected to reinforce credibility across diverse user segments.
From a policy perspective, BHIM’s expansion across Tier 1, 2, and 3 markets, along with support for over 15 regional languages and optimisation for low-connectivity environments, aligns with the government’s push to bridge digital divides. The focus on rural and semi-urban adoption reflects efforts to extend formal financial systems to underserved populations. Reward-led adoption and merchant partnerships further complement policy goals by enhancing transaction volumes and ecosystem participation, strengthening India’s digital payments architecture.
