Jagat Prakash Nadda has assured support for upgrading the Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences and Research into a super-specialty institute and for establishing a Greenfield Medical College on the lines of All India Institute of Medical Sciences at Naga Ki City in Chümoukedima district.
The assurance was given during a meeting with P. Paiwang Konyak at the Union Minister’s official residence in New Delhi on May 27.
The meeting focused on strengthening healthcare infrastructure and medical services in Nagaland. According to officials from Nagaland House, the discussions were highly positive, with the Union Health Minister assuring all possible support for the state’s healthcare proposals.
During the meeting, Paiwang proposed the upgradation of NIMSR under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), stating that the state government plans to introduce postgraduate medical courses once the first batch of MBBS students completes their studies in 2028.
He said the introduction of PG courses would help address the shortage of specialist doctors in Nagaland.
The minister also proposed the establishment of an AIIMS-like Greenfield Medical College at Naga Ki City to strengthen tertiary healthcare, medical education, and specialist medical services in the state.
According to Paiwang, the proposed institute could serve not only Nagaland but also neighbouring states while promoting medical tourism under the Government of India’s Act East Policy.
The minister further requested the establishment of a State Cancer Institute under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS), citing a rise in cancer cases in the state.
He also sought support for upgrading the State Mental Health Institute into a Centre of Excellence under the National Mental Health Programme and proposed setting up a State Allied Health Professional Institute in Kohima.
In addition, Paiwang urged the Centre to establish Accident and Trauma Centres in the remaining 12 districts of Nagaland to ensure timely emergency healthcare services across the state.
The minister also appealed for continuation of the PM-ABHIM scheme aimed at strengthening public health infrastructure.
Senior officials from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare were present during the meeting.
