Tipra Motha Party (TMP) founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma met Tripura Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu on Wednesday to submit a formal representation requesting the immediate clearance of long-pending bills passed by the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC). Operating under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, the TTAADC holds legislative, administrative, and executive mandates over designated tribal areas in the state; however, its passed legislation requires constitutional assent before taking effect. Debbarma highlighted that roughly 18 bills dating back to 2007 remain stuck with the state’s Tribal Welfare Department, severely hindering ground-level governance and implementation. The stalled measures cover crucial areas including tribal land reforms, customary laws, public recruitment policies, and administrative structures. Stressing that the council consists of elected representatives mandated by the public to deliver key reforms, Debbarma warned that political accountability suffers when approved decisions cannot be enforced. This ongoing standoff—which previously saw Debbarma approach the Supreme Court for judicial intervention—unfolds at a politically sensitive time, as the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) pursues an electoral alignment with the Tipra Motha ahead of the upcoming Village Committee elections.
