The family of Assam student Himashree Boro has named five individuals in a police complaint over her death in Andhra Pradesh, suspecting their possible involvement in the incident.
The complaint was lodged at the Government Railway Police (GRP) station, naming Govinda Reddy, Ajinur Hussain, Sumitra Deori, Jyoti Choudhury and Abinash. The family has also recorded its statement before police personnel who arrived from Andhra Pradesh to investigate the case.
Senior Andhra Pradesh police officials have taken charge of the investigation and assured the family that the probe would be expedited. However, the allegations against the five individuals have not yet been independently established, and their alleged involvement remains under investigation.
Himashree, who was 22, had travelled to Visakhapatnam to participate in a cultural programme as part of a dance troupe. She boarded a train for Assam on October 6, a day ahead of the other troupe members, as she had to appear for an examination in Guwahati.
During the journey, Himashree reportedly contacted her family and expressed concern about her safety inside the crowded train coach, alleging that several men were behaving inappropriately. Her body was recovered on October 7 near the railway tracks between Ponduru and Dusi in Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam district.
Her death has raised serious questions about passenger safety and the response to the reported distress call. The family has alleged that timely intervention by railway personnel might have helped prevent the tragedy and has demanded a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
The Assam government has also sought answers over the incident. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the bereaved family on Monday and assured them that justice would be delivered.
Himashree’s family has urged the investigating agencies to establish the sequence of events leading to her death and determine whether the individuals named in the complaint had any role in the incident. The allegations remain unproven, and the investigation is expected to establish the facts.
