India-Mauritius mobility programme expands as 14 more skilled workers depart for overseas jobs

India’s efforts to position itself as a global talent hub received a fresh boost on Wednesday as 14 skilled workers departed for Mauritius under the India-Mauritius Government-to-Government (G2G) Labour Mobility Framework, signalling growing momentum in structured overseas employment opportunities for Indian youth. The contingent was flagged off by Shri Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Minister of State for Education. The departure follows the successful placement of the first batch of Indian workers in Mauritius, while another 33 candidates are currently undergoing work permit and documentation processes. Implemented under the Memorandum of Understanding on Employment of Workers signed between India and Mauritius in May 2023, the programme is being facilitated by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), which was designated in July 2025 to support the Economic Development Board of Mauritius.

The selected workers, drawn from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur, Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab, will join leading retail chain Super U Mauritius in roles ranging from shelf workers, cashiers and cooks to electricians. The workers will be engaged on three-year contracts with annual compensation of about ₹4 lakh to ₹4.5 lakh, along with accommodation, transportation, medical coverage, work permits, overtime benefits and other statutory provisions. They will work across retail operations, inventory management, customer service, food preparation and electrical maintenance.Speaking at the event, Chaudhary said the growing partnership reflects global confidence in India’s skilled workforce and demonstrates how trusted government-backed mobility arrangements can create safe, transparent and aspirational pathways for international employment while safeguarding worker welfare.

In Guwahati, the initiative highlights emerging opportunities for skilled youth from Assam and the Northeast in global labour markets. Industry observers believe such programmes could encourage greater participation in skill development courses, strengthen workforce readiness and enhance the region’s contribution to India’s expanding international talent pipeline. The event was also attended by Shri Niranjan Kumar Sudhansu, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, along with officials associated with the programme.
