The Meriema Village Youth Organisation (MVYO) has withdrawn its proposed restriction on the movement of government-registered vehicles within Meriema village after receiving assurances that repair work on the damaged stretch of National Highway-2 will begin shortly.The decision was taken following a consultative meeting chaired by Kohima Deputy Commissioner B. Henok Buchem at the Deputy Commissioner’s office. The meeting was convened to discuss the organisation’s representation seeking immediate restoration of the damaged highway and was attended by officials of the district administration, the Public Works Department (National Highways), representatives of M/s Nitin Sai Construction and members of the MVYO.During the meeting, the youth organisation highlighted the deteriorating condition of the highway, pointing to incomplete construction work, poor drainage, uncleared debris and delays in execution despite submitting repeated representations to the authorities since March.
Officials from the Public Works Department (National Highways) informed the meeting that proposals for repairing the sinking stretch had already been submitted and that the work order for the affected section was expected to be issued on June 30.Representatives of M/s Nitin Sai Construction acknowledged that although some work had been carried out, the project remained unfinished. The contractor assured the meeting that construction materials would be mobilised by July 2 and that repair work would resume immediately thereafter.The Public Works Department also informed the participants that repair work on the sinking portion of NH-2 is expected to commence by July 6 following the issuance of the work order.It was further decided that the district administration and the Meriema Village Youth Organisation would jointly monitor the progress of the repair work. The department and the contractor will also coordinate closely to ensure the project is completed without further delay.
Following the assurances and commitments made during the meeting, the MVYO agreed to withdraw its proposed restriction on the movement of government-registered vehicles within the jurisdiction of Meriema village.
