Vi-Meta partnership highlights growing value of trusted digital infrastructure

Vodafone Idea (Vi) and Meta have launched Silent Mobile Verification (SMV) capabilities for Vi subscribers across WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram, underscoring the increasing economic importance of secure digital infrastructure in India’s rapidly expanding online ecosystem. The network-based authentication technology enables users to verify their mobile numbers in the background without manually entering verification credentials, switching between applications or waiting for OTP messages. The service will be available across multiple user journeys, including new registrations, mobile number validation, login and re-login, account recovery and authentication during security checks.

The partnership reflects a broader industry shift toward network-based verification systems as businesses and governments seek stronger safeguards against digital fraud and identity-related risks. By validating requests directly through Vi’s telecom network, SMV aims to reduce friction in user onboarding while improving security and customer experience across Meta’s platforms.

Abhijit Kishore, CEO of Vodafone Idea Limited, said telecom networks are increasingly becoming critical enablers of safer digital experiences. Meta India Managing Director and Country Head Arun Srinivas said the initiative represents an important step toward making verification simpler, seamless and more secure for users.

Analysts view the launch as a milestone in the development of telecom network APIs and trusted digital infrastructure, sectors expected to play a larger role as India’s digital economy expands. Vi said it plans to extend such capabilities to additional applications and advanced trust-based use cases, including enhanced authentication, fraud prevention and intelligent risk-based verification solutions.
