The 3rd Guwahati International Smart City International Open Fide Rating Chess Tournament started from today at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium with 473 players, including two International Masters, two Fide Masters and two Candidate Masters from different parts of the country taking part.
International Master Md Imran of Andhra Pradesh has been given top seeding while International Master Rathanvel, V S of Tamil Nadu is the second seeded player. Fide Master Arun Kataraia of Rajasthan is third seed of the tournament
In the first round all seeded players including International Master Md Imran, Rathanvel, V S and Fide Master Arun Kataria won their games.
Earlier, the tournament was inaugurated by Ramen Deka, Governor of Chhattisgarh.
Dilip Saikia, Member of Parliament, Bijulee Kalita Medhi, Member of Parliament, Nitin Narang, President, All India Chess Federation, Mukuta Deka, president, All Assam Chess Association, Rajib Dhar, General Secretary, All Assam Chess Association were also present in the opening ceremony.
The tournament is being organised by the All Assam Chess Association from July 14 to 17, 2026. It is being held in Swiss league system for nine rounds.
