Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president and Bokakhat MLA-elect Atul Bora has reaffirmed the party’s commitment to the implementation of the Assam Accord, saying several important responsibilities linked to the Accord now rest with the Central government.Speaking after the declaration of the Assam Assembly election results, Bora said the Assam government has already taken several steps connected to the Accord, but major matters such as border sealing, protection of indigenous people and implementation of Clause 6 recommendations fall under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Home Affairs. He said the AGP remains committed to ensuring that all provisions of the Accord are implemented properly and in their true spirit. According to Bora, protecting the identity, rights and interests of indigenous communities in Assam continues to remain one of the party’s main priorities.
The senior AGP leader said the present government’s actions against illegal encroachment have helped improve the law-and-order situation in many parts of the state. He claimed that people have largely supported eviction drives carried out in recent years and said the improved situation has created a more peaceful atmosphere across Assam. Bora further stated that peace and stability have encouraged industrial growth and investment in the state. According to him, industries are now showing greater interest in Assam because of a better environment for business and development. Talking about welfare measures, Bora said several schemes aimed at women and youth have helped strengthen the socio-economic condition of people in the state. He said continuous policy support and development programmes have created new opportunities for many sections of society. The AGP leader also credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for giving special attention to the development of the Northeast. He said various initiatives launched under the NDA government have helped speed up infrastructure growth and economic progress in the region.
The AGP, which remains an ally of the ruling NDA government in Assam, has continued to hold political relevance in the state despite changing political equations over the years. With its latest electoral performance, the party is expected to continue playing a role in the coalition government in Assam. The Assam Accord, signed in 1985 after the six-year Assam Agitation, remains one of the most politically sensitive and important agreements in the state. Issues related to illegal immigration, protection of Assamese identity and constitutional safeguards for indigenous communities continue to dominate political discussions in Assam even decades after the Accord was signed.
