Women constitute 64.4% of agri workforce but only 6-10% in top agri firms: Godrej Agrovet-IIMA Report

A new report by Godrej Agrovet Limited, in collaboration with IIM Ahmedabad (IIMA) and Godrej DEI Lab, has highlighted a stark gender gap in India’s agribusiness sector. Despite comprising 64.4% of the agricultural workforce, women hold only 6-10% of jobs in top agribusiness companies, the report titled Women in Agribusiness – Opportunities and Challenges reveals.

Launching the report at the Women in Agriculture Summit, Balram Singh Yadav, MD, Godrej Agrovet, emphasized the need for gender inclusivity. “By championing mentorship, aligning skills with industry needs, and fostering inclusive ecosystems, we aim to drive meaningful change,” he said. The company also announced the Godrej Agrovet Women in Agriculture Scholarship to support female students in the field. The report calls for gender-responsive training, leadership representation, and inclusive workplace reforms to bridge disparities. Godrej Agrovet has already increased women’s representation from 8% to 12% in FY25, with a target of 32% by FY28.

In Guwahati, a major agricultural trade hub, industry experts believe bridging gender disparities could enhance efficiency and sustainability in agribusiness. Greater female representation in leadership could drive better market access, technology adoption, and supply chain resilience, benefiting both producers and consumers. The summit also featured industry leaders discussing strategies for empowering women in agriculture and strengthening their role in business leadership.
