A massive landslide along National Highway-2 near Phesama in Nagaland has triggered the complete closure of a critical stretch connecting Kohima and Mao, causing major traffic disruptions and prompting swift response from authorities. The collapse, which occurred between KM 192.050 and KM 192.150, has rendered the highway impassable, affecting both passenger and commercial traffic. Officials say the damage is extensive, with road sections caving in and nearby electric infrastructure posing additional hazards. In response to the situation, Kohima Deputy Commissioner B. Henok Buchem issued a travel advisory on Saturday, June 1, urging the public to avoid the area and follow designated detour routes.
Heavy vehicles traveling toward Kohima from Manipur have been halted at Khuzama, while those heading to southern Nagaland or Manipur from Dimapur are being stopped at Sechü-Subza to prevent further congestion or safety risks. Alternative routes have been announced for light motor vehicles (LMVs). For Kohima-bound LMVs, traffic has been redirected through Demori Cove/JCC-Kisama-Phesama on a one-way basis. Vehicles heading south toward Manipur are advised to take the BSF Camp–Chakhabama–Kidima–Viswema/Mao Gate route.
Meanwhile, authorities have issued a warning to residents and travelers to stay away from the area due to damaged power lines and exposed conductors, which remain a serious safety concern. Restoration teams are on standby, and efforts to repair the collapsed highway are expected to begin shortly, once the terrain is stabilized.
