The Deputy Commissioner of Kohima district has declared Kigwema and Mitelephe villages as Infected and Surveillance Zones after African Swine Fever (ASF) was detected in the area. This decision follows a letter from the Chief Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, Kohima, dated August 5, 2025.
Kigwema and Mitelephe have been marked as Infected Zones, covering a one-kilometre radius around the infected sites. Surrounding these, a Surveillance Zone extends up to 10 kilometres to monitor and control the spread of the disease.
To contain the outbreak, authorities have imposed a strict ban on slaughtering pigs and the movement, import, and export of pigs, piglets, and pork products within these zones. These restrictions will remain until further notice.
The Deputy Commissioner appealed to local residents, farmers, and traders to follow the guidelines strictly. He emphasized that these measures are crucial to protect animal health and prevent major losses to the pig farming community, which is an important source of livelihood in the region.
