Assam Congress To Launch Mass Movement Against Kaziranga ESZ Cut, Land Acquisition At Engleng Pathar

A crucial review meeting of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) was held today at Rajiv Bhawan, chaired by APCC President Gaurav Gogoi.
The party’s Vice Presidents and General Secretaries attended the meeting where detailed deliberations were hekd on determining strategies for the upcoming Lok Sabha by-elections, Autonomous Council elections, and Municipal elections, as well as evaluating the party’s organisational strength. Alongside this, a review meeting of the APCC Social Media Department was also conducted.
The meeting reviewed the relief and rehabilitation measures undertaken by District Congress Committees (DCCs) and Congress frontal organisations—Seva Dal, Mahila Congress, Youth Congress, and NSUI—to support the people affected by the recent devastating floods in Upper Assam. Extensive discussions took place regarding initiatives such as rebuilding and repairing damaged houses, cleaning public and religious institutions, voluntary labor (shramdaan) to facilitate the resumption of classes in schools, and providing paddy seedlings as well as assisting farmers directly with transplantation in the fields. Additionally, a resolution was adopted to launch a statewide mass awareness campaign against the coal, stone, and sand syndicates identified as the primary drivers of this man-made disaster in Upper Assam.
The meeting strongly opposed the move to reduce the Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ) of Kaziranga National Park from 10 km, as well as the acquisition of indigenous people’s land at Engleng Pathar to hand it over to large corporate entities. The party resolved to spearhead a robust mass movement to build public opinion against these anti-people policies.
Furthermore, a proposal for zonal training of Pradesh Congress workers was approved. The leadership also seriously discussed the emerging churn among the new generation—especially Gen-Z—concerning the education system, while expressing serious concern over the appointment of RSS-driven individuals as Vice-Chancellors in Assam and universities across the country, as well as prioritizing ideologically aligned candidates for college principal posts. A proposal was also adopted to convene a State Youth Convention in the near future.
