Central Team Begins Ground Assessment of Assam Flood Damage Across Six Affected Districts

A six-member Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) from the Government of India arrived in Assam on Tuesday to undertake a comprehensive assessment of flood-related damage caused during the 2025 and 2026 flood seasons.

The team, led by Praveen Kumar Rai, Joint Secretary (UT) in the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, includes senior officials from the Ministries of Finance, Jal Shakti, Rural Development, Road Transport and Highways, and the National Remote Sensing Centre.

Upon arrival in Guwahati, the delegation was welcomed by officials of the Assam Revenue and Disaster Management Department and the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). During an introductory meeting, Additional Chief Secretary and ASDMA Chief Executive Officer L. Sweety Changsan presented a detailed overview of the state’s flood situation, highlighting the scale of damage and relief measures undertaken over the past two years.

To facilitate field inspections, the IMCT has been divided into two teams. One team will visit Dhemaji, Lakhimpur and Gohpur in Biswanath district, while the second team will inspect flood-affected areas in Cachar, Bajali and Chirang between July 8 and July 11.

The visits are aimed at conducting on-ground evaluations of the damage caused to public infrastructure, agriculture, roads and other essential assets, which will form the basis for the Centre’s assessment of the state’s relief requirements.

Following the district visits, the delegation is scheduled to hold a review meeting with the Assam Chief Secretary and senior government officials at Janata Bhawan in Dispur to discuss its preliminary observations and findings.

Senior officials, including Parag Kumar Kakaty, Alakananda Medhi and Pankaj Chamua, also attended the initial briefing held in Guwahati.
