India strengthens skills pipeline with Australia challenge ahead of Shanghai WorldSkills

India’s skilling ecosystem received a boost as the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) flagged off a 30-member contingent to participate in the Global Skills Challenge (GSC) 2026 in Australia, a key preparatory event ahead of the WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai later this year.

The Indian team, comprising 15 competitors and 15 experts, will compete from June 23 to 29 in a full-scale simulation of the WorldSkills environment. Organised by WorldSkills Australia, the challenge is expected to bring together nearly 600 competitors, experts and officials from member nations, offering participants exposure to international standards, advanced technologies and global best practices.

Market observers view the initiative as a positive indicator for India’s growing focus on human capital development. The competition will test candidates across 15 skill categories, including cloud computing, additive manufacturing, automobile technology, web technologies, graphic design, industrial mechanics and health and social care. The event will also familiarise participants with international evaluation systems and competition protocols.

MSDE Secretary Debashree Mukherjee said the challenge would help Team India gain valuable international experience and sharpen its competitive readiness. NSDC CEO Arunkumar Pillai described the event as the final preparation phase before Shanghai and urged competitors to remain focused on achieving global success.

In Guwahati, the development highlights rising opportunities in skill-based employment across the Northeast. With increasing investments in vocational education, digital services and technology-led industries, exposure to global competitions is expected to encourage more youth in Assam to pursue specialised training, strengthening the region’s talent pool and supporting future workforce demand.
