India’s largest steelmaker, JSW Steel, reported a massive 225.5 percent surge in consolidated net profit for the second quarter of the current financial year, reaching ₹5,359 crore compared to ₹1,646 crore in the same period of the previous year. This remarkable growth was driven by higher sales volumes and stronger pricing realisations. The company registered a 20.6 percent increase in revenue from operations, which rose to ₹54,486 crore in Q2 against ₹45,152 crore in Q2FY26. On a consolidated level, sales volumes surged 13 percent year-on-year to 7.46 million tonnes (mt), bolstered by the rapid ramp-up of a new 5 mt per annum capacity unit at Vijaynagar in Karnataka, which achieved 90 percent capacity utilisation. Consolidated crude steel production reached an all-time high of 7.27 mt, representing a 5 percent expansion year-on-year. Domestic sales scaled a record 6.29 mt, growing 12 percent year-on-year, while exports from India totaled 0.98 mt, accounting for 13 percent of total sales. Adjusted EBITDA stood at ₹9,941 crore with an EBITDA margin of 18.3 percent, up significantly from ₹7,849 crore in Q2FY26. Describing the broader macroeconomic environment, JSW noted that overall Indian steel consumption remained robust, expanding 7 percent year-on-year to 43.4 mt in Q2FY27 and 7.5 percent in H1FY27, supported by steady domestic demand and healthy engineering exports. While total steel trade including semi-finished products remained broadly balanced during the first half, India continued to be a net importer of finished steel. In a major strategic move, the board of JSW Steel and its joint venture partner, JFE Steel Corporation of Japan, approved a massive 5 mt capacity expansion at JSW JFE Ltd (formerly BSPL). This expansion will scale the plant’s total capacity to 9.5 mt with commissioning targeted by FY31, supported by a joint equity commitment of ₹7,500 crore from both partners. Additionally, JSW’s total consolidated capex roadmap as of September 30 stood at ₹1,48,402 crore, earmarked for deployment over the next five to six years to strengthen its market leadership.
