In a landmark achievement for Assam and Indian mountaineering, Rupamoni Gorh has etched her name in history as the first woman from the state to successfully summit Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak at 8,848.86 meters.
Gorh, hailing from Lilabari in Lakhimpur district, reached the top on Thursday, May 21, 2026, as a member of an all-women expedition organized by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). The team braved extreme weather, low oxygen levels, and treacherous terrain to complete the ascent, showcasing remarkable endurance and teamwork.
Her feat marks a major milestone for women’s representation in high-altitude adventure sports from Northeast India. The ITBP, which routinely conducts expeditions to foster courage and operational readiness among its personnel, fielded an all-women contingent this season to promote gender inclusion in extreme mountaineering.
Officials confirmed that Gorh’s climb was part of the force’s ongoing push to encourage more women from remote regions to take up challenging roles. With this summit, she joins the elite league of Indian women mountaineers while also becoming a source of inspiration for aspiring climbers across Assam.
The expedition’s success was confirmed after the team returned safely to the Everest Base Camp. Family members and residents of Lakhimpur celebrated the news, calling it a proud moment for the state.
