Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal were among the leaders who paid tributes to Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika on his death anniversary.
In a social media post, Shah said the Bard of the Brahmaputra left behind a luminous legacy that will continue to enrich our culture through his timeless music, bring Assam the honour it deserves on the world stage, and inspire humanity with the spirit of unity.
“On the Punyatithi of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, I offer my deepest tributes. This great artist has left behind among us a radiant and eternally memorable cultural heritage. Through his timeless songs, it will continue to enrich our culture, bestow upon Assam the honour it deserves on the global stage, and inspire humanity forever with the message of unity,” Shah said.
Hazarika, popularly known as the Bard of Brahmaputra, died in 2011 in Mumbai. He was conferred India’s highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna, posthumously in 2019.
The Assam Chief Minister paid tributes to the legendary singer, saying his contribution to the state’s cultural landscape was unparalleled.
In a post on X, Sarma said, “Dr Bhupen Hazarika — a name that echoes through every household in Assam and beyond. The Bharat Ratna awardee’s contribution to Assam’s cultural landscape is unparalleled, and we are fortunate to have witnessed his performances live.”
Similarly, Sonowal said that Bhupen Hazarika was a powerful voice for humanity, harmony and universal brotherhood.
“Bhupen Da’s eternal creations and profound ideals have inspired generations and will continue to be a guiding light for humanity in the years to come,” he said.
A team of senior Congress leaders, led by former Assam Legislative Assembly Leader of the Opposition, Debabrata Saikia and Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress President Mira Borthakur Goswami, visited the Samadhi Kshetra of Bhupen Hazarika at Jalukbari and paid floral tributes to the legendary singer.
