Retirement planning in India is witnessing a shift from a singular focus on wealth accumulation to ensuring a sustainable income stream after retirement, as rising life expectancy, inflation and healthcare costs reshape financial priorities, according to Anurag Gupta, Chief Business Officer, Partnership Channels and Head of Retirement at Axis Max Life Insurance Limited.
Gupta said the growing popularity of the Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE) movement has encouraged many individuals to target a retirement corpus, but cautioned that reaching a financial milestone alone does not guarantee long-term security. Instead, retirees need a strategy that converts accumulated wealth into dependable monthly income capable of lasting for two to three decades.
He cited a recent industry report on retirement readiness, which found that only around 37 per cent of respondents had accumulated even a quarter of their target retirement corpus, while nearly seven in ten believed Rs 1 crore would be sufficient despite rising inflation and increasing longevity. The report also showed that only about one-third of respondents were confident their retirement savings would last beyond ten years.
Gupta said retirement solutions must balance regular income with liquidity to meet emergencies, while also incorporating inflation protection and legacy planning. He added that the industry is moving towards integrated retirement products that combine wealth creation, income generation, financial protection and estate planning under a single framework.
In Guwahati, financial advisors and insurance distributors are witnessing growing interest in retirement-focused investment and insurance solutions, particularly among salaried professionals, entrepreneurs and self-employed individuals. Rising financial awareness, coupled with concerns over inflation and post-retirement healthcare expenses, is driving demand for products that provide predictable lifetime income rather than relying solely on corpus accumulation, indicating a gradual shift in retirement planning behaviour across the city.
